2.0 Johannesburg 



When:  18 to 21 April 1

Where:  Sandton, Johannesburg, and Soweto. Staying at the Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa. This looks like the entire hotel, but its actually our three suites:






Weather:  Absolutely stunning. Sunny and pleasant.  Around 27 C. 

What:  A few days in Jo’burg, tour of Soweto, quiz night at a local pub (we lost).

Who:  The fab four, and Barbara, Sav, Shane, Sophie

Workout: None at all.  I'm on holiday (and glad I bought larger sized safari clothing)

Walking: Walking is questionable in Jo’burg.  So mostly in the shopping centre and a little in Soweto. Back and forth to the hotel desk to get new keys.  

Wine:  A really awful Sauvignon Blanc and a really delicious Sauvignon Blanc.  Both are from South Africa. This is the delicious one: 



Whine:  The smoking!  It's almost everywhere and especially in the pubs. Ugh!

Wtf: Victoria Beckham's doppelganger 

Wild: The history of Soweto and seeing Nelson Mandela's house and Archbishop Tutu's house both Nobel laureates whose homes are on the same street. The history was amazing, if not disturbing.  These are letters that Mandela wrote while in prison.


  



Wildlife: Many birds everywhere.  Hadada ibis:

 


Water: our own private pool and gardens!!


Wonderful: Taryn Daley of Compass Rose Travel.  Taryn recommended the Fairlawns and ensured we got fabulous private house and exemplary service.

As well, getting the chance to meet some of Shane and Steph's relatives in South Africa and experiencing some of the culture.  Wonderful.

Africa 2024 1.0 London When:  April 15 and 16 Where:  London at The Savoy! Weather:  Very windy, sunny, cloudy, raining.  Mixed bag What:  Enjoying London Who:  The fab five:  Dan, Brent, Steph, Shane, and Russell. Africa 2024 3.0 Botswana When:  20 to 25 April 2024 Where:  Okavango Delta in Northern Botswana Weather:  Sunny and hot during the day with highs of up to 37C.  Quite cool at night with the temperature dropping to 13C.  Even in the early evening as the sun is going down, as Shane said:  the temperature drops like a stone. What:  Safaris!  Jeep safari, helicopter safari, walking safari, water (mokoro) safari. All fabulous. Who:  The fab four.  Also our guide Sinka and our hostess Mz Tee Workout: Not a chance.  I think I'll remove this category. Walking: Walking safari with our armed guide.  I had some ethical concerns about going on a walking safari.  I thought the idea of the guide being armed and having to potentially kill an animal for my selfish viewing pleasure was unethical. Africa 2024 5.0 Stellenbosch

Africa 2024 5.0 Stellenbosch When:  30 April to 4 May Where:  Stellenbosch and Franchhoek, Western Cape.  South Africa's premier wine region which is about an hour outside of Cape Town.  Stellenbosch is a major university town as well with about 30,000 students.  A very different atmosphere than other areas of South Africa as Afrikaans is widely spoken here. Weather:  Generally beautiful.  A few clouds here and there with high temperatures up to 30C.  Steady rain on the day we left. What:  Wine touring and relaxing. Who:  The fab four.  Also our host Dion and our driver Mawethu.  We also met two Moniques from Mauritius.  Shane and Steph knew them from their childhood in South Africa. Workout: Hotel gym.  Not a bad gym and got in two workouts (sleeping in far too late).
