Africa 2024 7.0 Durban

7.0 Durban

When:  9 to 13 May

Where:  The Oyster Box, Umhlanga Rocks, Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. Just outside of Durban

Weather:  Sub-Tropical and warm but mostly overcast.  High temperature from 22 to 28C

What:  Final stop in Africa.  Was a few days of R&R and lazing by the pool.

Who:  Daniel, Brent, Stephanie, Shane and their wonderful friends:

Jenny and Eric

Mark

Nola M

Sue

Judy & Nola

Disa & Josh

Workout: just one at a local Planet Fitness.  Excellent gym but way too hot in there.

Walking: Just a bit on the boardwalk on the beach

Wine:  Sauvignon Blanc and a lovely Pilotage from Walker's Winery in Stellenbosch .  We also got to enjoy some lovely Moët and Chandon.

Whine:  We only got one beach day.  But summer has just begun in Vancouver!

WTF:  Although the room at The Oyster Box was very nice and with a beautiful view, we decided to upgrade ourselves to a bigger room.  When we asked, they said no problem, showed us 3 different rooms and we decided on one.  They said it would take about 5 or 10 minutes to finish up maid services and that they would come to get us when ready.  Well, in the end those 5 minutes became 5 hours when we finally got moved.  There's an expression in South Africa called ‘now now’.  That usually means sometime in the distant future!

Wild: Although I did remember to call my mother on Sunday as it was mother's day, we did not realize how difficult it would be to get dinner reservations.  We did finally get a reservation at The Butcher Boys and had some delicious steak.

Wildlife: These thieving cheeky monkeys!  They'll steel food right off the table when eating at the patio.  Funny to watch the staff spray them with water bottles like they were cats.

This little guy tries to show how cute and innocent he is, but he clearly planned to burgle our room and we thwarted his plan!

Stephanie wasn't so lucky.  The thief stole her banana and even left the peel behind!

Water: Indian Ocean.  Beautiful and warm.  Our  first time with our feet it this ocean.  Apparently the ocean around Melbourne Australia is now called the Great Southern Ocean.

Despite being beside each other (they meet somewhere on the coast of South Africa) the Indian Ocean is very warm and the Atlantic is very cold.

Wonderful: Meeting all of Shane's and Stephanie's friends from South Africa.  A great group of people. We spent an afternoon just chatting with them and walking the boardwalk.
